It was the Winter of 1965. I was a fifth grade student at St. Gabriel School in San Francisco. My brother, Tom, was a freshman at St. Ignatius High School on Stanyan Street. I don't recall exactly, but I'm guessing that Tom must have told me about the tradition of the Bruce-Mahoney Trophy, which is awarded to the school which wins two of three athletic competitions (football - basketball - baseball) between rivals St. Ignatius and Sacred Heart High Schools in The City.
