California Department of Health - 2/19/21
The California Department of Public Health updated the Guidelines for Youth and Adult Sports on February 19, 2021. There are numerous updates to review including moderate-to-high-risk sports being allowed to play in the purple and/or red tiers, as long as cases stay between 14-7 cases per 100,000 persons. This is exciting news for sports like water polo and football. However, volleyball was moved to the most restrictive yellow tier, where basketball continues to reside since the tiered return system was established by Governor Newsom and the CDPH. This update draws a clear line in the sand regarding the difference between outdoor and indoor sports. As numerour studies have shown, indoor events provide more opportunity for the COVID-19 virus to spread whereas outdoor sports appear to be a safer place to play.
Keep checking back for more updates as the CIF, CCS, and WCAL make any modifications with the new guidelines.
